Family Vacations

Family Vacations

Whether it be a Staycation or a Vacation; personally speaking I thinks its critical to spend time, bonding, maintaining unity and creating memories with my family.  It seems like just yesterday, but I can vividly reminisce leaving Brooklyn as a young girl (me my mother and my siblings) to visit our family down South.  The memories and the pictures we have of those trips are priceless, however I do believe we may have been some of the first to take a Staycation, before Staycationing became a “thing.”  I inherited this wonderful tradition, and would later take my children on a summer vacation every year…and although my children are grown and have children and livelihoods of their own, we still make it a priority to block out time from our hectic lives, to kick back and enjoy one another’s company away from the distractions of our everyday lives, this time allows us to pause and realize the value and the appreciation we have for one another…all the fun, laughter and experiences are all simply benefits. So as I stated earlier whether it be a Staycation or a Vacation…do what works for you…just remember to breathe…enjoy life and one another.

European Luxury Meets Southern Hospitality

There’s a certain cliché that one must travel far and away to experience the mind and body rejuvenation of an award-winning spa.  In reality…there’s probably one within driving distance of you that’ll do the job just as well.

This past weekend my Husband and I spent an amazing weekend celebrating our anniversary at Chateau Elan; a Winery, European-Style Spa and Golf Resort in Braselton Georgia; an hour away from Atlanta and just a little over two hours from our home.  Ideal for the Golf Enthusiast, Wine Connoisseur and Spa Lover, this gem…nestled inside a French Provincial inspired mansion, shares grounds with three meticulously sprawling golf courses, contoured fairways, breathtaking lakes and two winding streams.  It’s were European Luxury meets Southern Hospitality.

Enjoy!

Just returning from a seven-day Caribbean Cruise that ported out of “The Big Easy.”  Over the course of the last ten days, enjoying Creole Cuisine, Island Flavors and the breath-taking scenery as I cruise the Western Caribbean Islands (Cozumel Mexico, Belize, Roatan Honduras and the beautiful Mahogany Bay) was only half the fun. The world-renowned entertainment aboard the ocean liner (Carnivals Dream) was everything. “Laissez-faire!” to such an incredible vacation.  Enjoy the pics.

A Prayer This Sunday

A Prayer This Sunday

A Prayer This Sunday

Happy Sunday!  Contrary to the circumstances that surround not just our community but our country, I am feeling rather optimistic.  There’s an epidemic of Police shooting Black Men plaguing our country and with the fatal shooting of Keith Lamont Scott in Charlotte NC this week…the ramifications hit home.

What has become of humanity?…The quality of being humane, compassionate, kind, mindful, benevolent in the best of times and the worst of times.  As realistic as this past week has been, for me it is just as surreal.  As I stroll the streets of this beautiful City I moved to as a child, a City I grew to love and proudly make my home, to start my family and raise my children, like most of the people here, for me this has been a very emotional week.  I feel both sympathy and empathy for all the families involved in such a tragedy (the family that lost a Father and a Husband…, as well as the family whose love one is responsible for such a loss).  I’ve felt fear because of the tension between the Police and the Civilians, not just for my Son and my Husband but for my entire Family.  I’ve also felt anger towards the Police and their “I felt threatened” protocol, enabling this to happen yet again.  I’ve felt disgusted over the violent rioting that took place earlier in the week, and immediately overshadowed the display of strength and unity of the peaceful protest and demonstrations that have taken place throughout the City…which made me feel proud.  I’ve felt frustration toward the media, (national and local) for its general and bias depiction of my City.  In processing my emotions I know this unfortunate incident does not define the greater community of Charlotte, like many Cities in America, my City has been tainted by an unjust act that is happening way too often, and there’s work for us to do. I feel that this is our wakeup call.  The only power we truly have is over ourselves (Police, Civilians of every ethnicity, all registered voters and those of legal age to vote but aren’t yet registered, Clergy, City and State Officials…).  Each of us have to make the conscious decision to be the change.  Although my heart is still heavy, I’m very optimistic as my City still reigns royalty and today I have nothing but love for it.

Suffice the wayward conditioning of mans mentality, each of us are all created differently yet equal.  My prayer is that we learn to  love ourselves so that we can respect and appreciate the differences in one another as it adds value to our own lives. By a power greater than ours, we are purposely meant to live in this world together.

Aged To Perfection

Aged To Perfection

Angel Tree

Angel Oak at Angel Oak Park on Johns Island near Charleston SC

Aged To Perfection

When I think of what it means to age to perfection, the Angel Oak Tree is what comes to mind.  An absolute must see when visiting the Charleston South Carolina area. Towering over the property once owned by a former slave owner; (Justus Angel) the live oak stands over 60 ft tall with the longest branch measuring in at 187 ft in length.  Although its age is uncertain, there’s much to be said for the resilience of this treasure from God, as it has obviously endured the test of time, its latest and most recent was recovering from the severe damage it encountered during Hurricane Hugo.  Estimated to be anywhere from 500 to 1500 years old…standing as marvelous today as ever, its character and beauty remain intact.  And year in and year out thousands of visitors come from far and wide to respectively embrace the glory of the Angel Oak, making its story apart of their story.

Although I understand the importance of utilizing and referencing chronological order in our society…I have to say in my opinion this practice is a major factor in why we live in a culture that is so obsessed with youth, this and the mystery of the Angel Oak prompts me to pose the question; How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?  Interesting thought huh!  Well, because I’m so use to the chronological order in which we gauge our lives, I found coming up with an answer to be quite challenging, however the more I thought about it, I was eventually able to put aside the mental conditioning of all the limitations that come with aging, and I realized because my heart is still filled with that same excitement for life and all its possibilities as it was when I was a young girl, and my mind is filled with the wisdom of years of life lessons…much like the Angel Oak Tree, I was unable to claim an exact number.  I realized that age is truly no more than a question of mind over matter…if you don’t mind it…it really doesn’t matter.  What matters is when I rise, I am grateful, with the sole purpose to be better today than I was yesterday (mind, body and spirit).  At whatever rate, we will all naturally mature with/in time. What I know for sure is; where we are in life is exactly where we’re supposed to be.

When it comes to aging; because I graciously appreciate the gift of life…rather than resist the mayhem that comes with it (the invasive personal heat-waves, the waning eye vision, the brain farts…the fact that I call my grands by my children’s names and vice-versa…) I’ve chosen to respect and embrace it all (Why not…it’s inevitable) and I’ve never felt more alive.  With love to share, health to spare and friends and family that care…that’s reason enough to celebrate everyday.  I may not be the most attractive, or the most brilliant person,  yes I’m flawed, and my body may have experienced its own version of Hurricane Hugo, but like The Angel Oak; that’s what makes me; me.  I too am one of Gods treasures, I too am beautiful and I’m here.

Every year for Labor Day Weekend, the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia is transformed for Made In America’s sprawling two day outdoor festival with The Philadelphia Museum of Art as the backdrop.

This year I chose to celebrate my Birthday Weekend along with Labor Day Weekend in the City of Brotherly Love.  Yesss!!!  The birthplace of our nation…Philadelphia!  We attended Jay Z’s annual MIA (Made In America) Festival at Benjamin Franklin Parkway, and trust me it was everything (All around largest and most organized festival I’ve ever attended).  And to make the weekend twice as nice we caught the Sold Out-Bad Boy Reunion in The Big Apple at Madison Square Garden; outside of incredible, I absolutely have no words to describe such energy at this concert.  I must say…at fifty-plus, I’m holding back on nothing and it feels sooo good.  My Birthday Weekend consisted of all things Karen (fabulous company, fabulous weather, fabulous food and fabulous music and entertainment). Definitely the stuff memories are made of.
